1. What CopyShark Does
CopyShark is a Chrome extension that converts visible content into selectable text. It supports selection OCR, visible-tab OCR, local image and PDF OCR, live video OCR, hover OCR, and YouTube subtitle extraction.
This Privacy Policy explains how CopyShark processes data when a user performs OCR on screenshots, images, webpages, PDFs, videos, or YouTube subtitles inside Chrome. CopyShark is designed as a local-first OCR extension. OCR processing and history storage happen on the user's device unless the user explicitly chooses an external follow-up action such as translation.
CopyShark is a Chrome extension that converts visible content into selectable text. It supports selection OCR, visible-tab OCR, local image and PDF OCR, live video OCR, hover OCR, and YouTube subtitle extraction.
When the user starts OCR, CopyShark processes only the visual content needed for that OCR action. This may include text visible in screenshots, images, PDFs, rendered webpages, video frames, or subtitle text shown on a page.
To help the user identify previous OCR results, the extension may save the page title and page URL together with the OCR result in local history.
The extension stores user preferences such as OCR language, quality, theme, translation target, history limit, and hover/live OCR settings.
CopyShark does not sell user data and does not transfer OCR history or captured content to the developer.
The extension may open third-party websites only when the user explicitly clicks those actions:
translate.google.com when the user clicks Translate
docs.new when the user clicks Open Docs
When the user opens Google Translate, the selected OCR text may be included in the translation URL and therefore sent to Google to perform translation. This happens only after the user explicitly triggers the Translate action.
OCR history is stored locally on the device in IndexedDB until the user deletes it or until older entries are pruned according to the user's configured history limit.
Settings are stored locally in Chrome extension storage until the user changes or removes them.
| Permission | Why It Is Needed |
|---|---|
activeTab |
Lets the extension OCR the currently active tab after user action. |
contextMenus |
Adds the image OCR action to the right-click menu. |
downloads |
Lets the user export OCR results as TXT or PDF files. |
offscreen |
Runs OCR workers, PDF rendering, and preprocessing outside the popup lifecycle. |
scripting |
Injects the content script into the current tab when needed for OCR workflows. |
storage |
Stores local OCR history and user settings. |
<all_urls> |
Allows OCR features to work on arbitrary websites the user chooses to process. |
CopyShark is designed to process OCR locally inside the extension package. The extension does not maintain a developer-controlled backend for OCR history, captured images, or extracted text.
CopyShark is not intended to collect personal information from children. The extension does not require account creation and does not request age information.
This policy may be updated when the extension's data practices, permissions, or OCR features change. The updated version should be published with a new "Last Updated" date.
